Did you receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for Christmas? What was once an expensive hobby or commercial tool, UAVs are now an affordable and popular gift for the general public.
While commercial UAV operators should know the rules, a high percentage of recreational drone users will not.
Just last month a Melbourne man was being investigated by Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) after using his drone to fetch a cooked sausage outside a Bunnings store.
In Australia you don’t need CASA’s approval to fly a drone for fun, however there are a number of simple rules to follow. To fly for commercial activities a special licence is required, except when flying over your own land or with small drones under 2kgs.
