Welcome to the 15th monthly issue of ForestTECH News
Every month, numbers of forest resource managers, remote sensing and mapping and GIS specialists, inventory foresters, researchers and key product and service suppliers to this part of the industry continue to grow. Thanks for your support and your ongoing contributions.
First up, many of you have been involved with us in designing ForestTECH 2018 over the last month or so. This years’ series runs in Rotorua, New Zealand on 14-15 November 2018 and then again in Melbourne, Australia on 20-21 November 2018. Some of the key features of the annual technology series this year are the number of international tech providers who this year will be involved, the focus on integrating research findings into local forestry operations and the huge strides that have been made with VR, AR and mixed reality and the opportunities for use in forest management and operations over the last 12 months.
As of this week, we are anticipating presenters outside of Australia and New Zealand to include Kevin Lim, Lim Geomatics, Canada, ESRI, USA, Kaapo Sappala, CTRL Reality, Finland, Guoliang Liu, aiTree, Canada, Michael Breetzke, Swift Geospatial, South Africa and Taqtile, USA to be presenting. The ForestTECH 2018 programmes for both countries are expected to be put up onto the website in the next few weeks.
Back to this monthly issue. We cover a number of innovations and research being undertaken with drones or UAV’s. We’ve included a report of just where the industry in New Zealand is at along with the key issues for drone users (applicable of course to the other side of the Tasman as well) and a look at the scale and potential value to the UK economy for drones. We’ve also included details on Facebook cancelling their giant drone project, which was meant to fly at high altitude and beam down internet connectivity to remote areas.
Other stories include how open data is impacting on geospatial businesses and whether photogrammetric point clouds are superior to Lidar point clouds. Enjoy this month’s collation of stories and news.
